Website Localization

multilingual websites

Multilingual websites are regarded as the biggest enabler for global business, the highway to international success, and the ticket to revenue on a worldwide scale. TranslateService.com’s website localization services help enterprises of all sizes realize their full potential in global markets.

Our professional translation services cover all aspects of website localization including content translation, linguistic review, L10N engineering, and multilingual testing. We translate websites developed using a variety of technology frameworks including static HTML and dynamically generated contents using backend databases and CMS systems (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Sitecore, etc.)

Website translation is often the first concrete step in a company’s global business development. However, not all websites are translated equally. Just because your website displays in different languages, doesn’t mean it always translates into business success internationally. Poor translation of your web content can negatively affect your brand with foreign customers. This is why you need to work with an experienced localization supplier with the linguistic skills, engineering know-how, as well as cultural sophistication to ensure your multilingual web content resonates with foreign customers.

Translation Process

Translation Process

For simple websites, we translate the static HTML files directly and then return translated versions to the client in the same file structure. However, for most modern websites where backend CMS systems organize and administer the content dynamically, we translate XML files that are exported from backend systems such as WordPress or Drupal. Most CMS systems have the ability to import/export content in XML files, but it does require the client to have a dedicated web team for such tasks to create the localized versions.

In cases where the client doesn’t have the resources to manage the import/export of XML files for translation, our own localization engineering teams can help perform the task. In some situations, we also translate directly in the backend CMS systems (such as WordPress) using 3rd party plugins that are designed to support globalization. In either case, the import/export process can create substantial work especially when the localized websites must be updated following the source language version. This requirement is best processed with our proxy translation solution called GMScloud.

Website Proxy Translation

Website Proxy Translation

While the traditional website localization process is adequate for simple and static websites that do not update frequently, it’s difficult to deal with sites that generate much of their content from backend databases and CMS systems dynamically. The amount of effort involved to collect all the content to be translated and export it from various backend systems is cumbersome. To make matters worse, translating future updates efficiently becomes next to impossible. This is why proxy translation technology has gained substantial popularity in recent years because it offers an easy alternative to the manual website localization approach.

With proxy translation, our translation server crawls a client’s website automatically to retrieve all of the content. Next, the content is systematically processed to extract words (excluding codes and other non-translatable strings) for translation. The system automatically builds the translated pages and stores them as static content on the cloud. Once a user requests a localized web page from the client web server, it fetches the information from the proxy server and returns it to the user on demand. Two of the most important benefits of web proxy translation is that it allows future updates of the original website to be automatically captured for translation and it eliminates much of the manual work involved to export and import content for translation.

Localized Website Testing

Localized Website Testing

Once a website has been translated, the localized web pages must be tested functionally and linguistically to assure quality. Functional testing verifies all online forms and links are fully operating in the translated version as intended, such as user login and signup pages, as well as shopping carts for ecommerce sites. Linguistic testing ensures all translations are accurate and appropriate based on context. Linguistic testing can also involve checking for translation consistency and fixing content truncations and misalignments due to text expansion and contractions as a result of the localization process.
